Letting Go

To Be Free

And so

I gathered up

all that had once

held me back,

all those

in-your-face

old triggers

that once caused

deep pain.

I gathered up all

the memories

of all the times

and all the present

stories and thoughts

of people

and situations

that were

dishonoring.

And with a prayer,

I flung it all

as far as I could —

to be recycled —

to be free.

  1. Most of the time it seems we have difficulty being comfortable with who we are, mostly because as a whole people aren’t careful about what they say about others and how they say it. This is probably because those people are uncomfortable with who they are also. Throwing away the hurts and the disrespect is as good a solution as any, but I wouldn’t want it recycled, I’d prefer to forget it ever happened and just pray to be strengthened in the process.

      1. Laurie, you have the spiritual strength and knowledge to let it go. When people hurt others they do more harm to themselves in attitude in compassion and in love than can be done to you. When one is hurt, insulted, or even physically injured, it is good if the suffering of Jesus can be called to mind. In one way the pains we suffer bind us closer to our Lord. He understands and knows that we will always heal because we love Him.

  2. I love this. The “in-your-face triggers” really struck a chord. I’m with my family in West Virginia–Mom, Dad, twin sister and her son, older sister and her boyfriend, then me and my two, and SO MANY personalities together all at one time is overwhelming. So I’m really feeling those old triggers. It’s always so helpful to read your words, to remember that I’m not alone with this intensity of thought and feeling and memory. Thank you for your clear articulation of my experience, our shared human experience. ❤ ❤ ❤
